Manhattan Construction Charity Golf Event Raises $61,000

HOUSTON, Texas –The Manhattan Construction Co. 9th Annual Golf Classic event organizers announced today they have raised $61,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This year’s event was held at Cypresswood Golf Club on November 13, 2009. “Over the years, the Manhattan Golf Classic has raised approximately $270,000 for MDA and this year’s event has been our most successful yet,” said event chairman and Manhattan project manager, Jason Fuller. “This cause is close to the heart for the Manhattan family and those who volunteer each year at the tournament. For some it’s the loss of a loved one and for others it’s to support the cause to find a cure,” said Fuller Duane Duffy, Manhattan executive vice president, came up with the idea to hold the golf classic to support and then honor long time friend and founder of Miscellaneous Steel Industries, Steve Ledbetter, who was diagnosed with ALS and ultimately succumbed to the disease. “I have made a personal commitment to continue this annual event to benefit ALS research and it could not be done without the great Manhattan employees and the MDA volunteers that help with the tournament and along with Houston area owners, design firms, subcontractors and vendors that participate in the tournament.” Duffy stated.

Local Preschool Makes a Splash with a Fresh Coat of Paint from McCarthy’s Heart Hats

In true builder fashion, more than 20 employees of the McCarthy Building Companies Texas Division recently donated their time to paint classrooms in order to improve the Mi Escuelita Cockrell Hill Preschool in Dallas. Mi Escuelita Preschool, a school providing early childhood education to low-income at-risk children in the Dallas area, serves almost 500 children ages two to five years old at five locations throughout the metroplex. The painting event held at the school was made possible by McCarthy's "Heart Hats" community involvement program, an initiative dedicated to encouraging, supporting and recognizing McCarthy employees' volunteer efforts in a variety of causes to ensure real needs are being met in communities where employees work, live and play. This company-wide volunteer program allows McCarthy employees across the country to take at least one (paid) full-day off from work annually to utilize their building skills and other talents to aid local organizations such as the Mi Escuelita Preschools in Dallas.

Tacky Sweater Contest Brings LAN's Employees Together

Employees across various offices at civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) served up an extra helping of fun for the holiday season by donning their ugliest outfits to win a tacky sweater contest. Some dug through their grandma’s closet, others visited a thrift store, and some even scoured Pinterest to come up with creative ideas. Set up like a fashion show, employees cat-walked in hideous sweaters and regaled the audience with crazy stories. Winners received $25 gift cards and were memorialized in the firm’s Tacky Holiday Sweater Hall of Fame. Check out the video of the contest. Sarah Strauss, said the event brought the firm’s senior and junior employees from different departments together. “We also had a Kazoo contest with teams playing songs like Jingle Bells or Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,” said Sarah Strauss, the firm’s senior marketing coordinator who organized the event. “It was just a fun and silly way to get to know colleagues from other departments or offices in a relaxed atmosphere.” Dennis Petersen, LAN’s President, said his sweater came straight from his mother-in-law’s closet. "We told her it was a 'festive' sweater party. We didn't tell her it was ugly,” said Petersen. Hanadi Masri, who works at LAN’s accounting department, won the tacky sweater contest. Her ensemble included lights, garland and presents in her hair. Candy canes, an elf hat, and stockings on her feet as boots completed her outfit. Masri said she sought inspiration at the Dollar Store. "I looked in my closet and found an old sweater that got ugly through the years, and I went to the Dollar Store, and the ideas grew in the Dollar Store," said Masri. Alex Kajdan, an engineer, thanked his grandmother for winning the second prize. "This was a gift from my grandmother. It looks like I have a turtleneck but it's actually a double collar. Not sure what that's about. At one point, this had lights on it!” said Kajdan.

VoLANteers Help out Habitat for Humanity

VoLANteers Help out Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County (NWHC) is a nonprofit interfaith ministry whose mission is to build safe, affordable homes for people in need. Over the last 25 years, the organization has built houses for hundreds of families by working with volunteers who want to give back to their community. On Sept. 19th, 15 Volunteers from LAN (voLANteers) joined in this mission by helping out at Hamill Crossing, a neighborhood designed and built by Habitat to house as many as 47 families. The houses, approximately 1300 square feet in area, are built from lumber and fiber cement, and are Energy Star 3.0 rated to help families save money. The organization was finishing up the final three houses on the street, and VoLANteers assisted with one of the houses. Working along with the family members who would be living at the house, VoLANteers helped paint the interior and exterior of the house, assembled kitchen cabinets and put up fencing. “It was great to see my colleagues working hard for seven hours on a Saturday to help others,” said Abby Stanhouse, a VoLANteer. “The families were so grateful for our help. Also, it was a great bonding experience for all of us.”
