McCarthy Holdings, Inc. Celebrates 150 Years of Building by Giving Back to the Community

Steve Hermosillo from the Watts/ Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club shows his excitement after receiving a brand new bike at McCarthy Building Companies' 150th anniversary bike and wagon building for charity event. Representative of McCarthy’s commitment as a community-based builder, approximately 300 McCarthy employees in Southern California constructed the bikes and wagons during a teambuilding exercise at the employee-owned company’s weekend long shareholder’s meeting and 150th anniversary celebration. This was just one of several similar charitable events McCarthy held across the country. In all, 1,600 McCarthy employee-owners assembled 300 bicycles and 300 wagons for children in local communities. Events were held in Dallas, Newport Beach, Calif., Phoenix, San Francisco and St. Louis. Rebecca Caldwell, director of resource development for the Roy W. Roberts, II Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club in Los Angeles, commented, “McCarthy made our kids smile and touched their hearts by giving them these wonderful bikes! Living in Watts, Willowbrook and Compton, our Club kids come from some of the roughest, toughest and poorest neighborhoods in South Central Los Angeles. For these kids, this is the first bike they’ve ever owned and the entire event made them feel special. As a Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club staff member, I cannot thank McCarthy enough for such an incredible gift and experience for our Club kids!”

McCarthy Building Companies President, California Region Randy Highland and Assistant Project Manager Marcy Maduro assemble one of 60 wagons that were given to six local charities in OC, LA and Riverside as a part of McCarthy's 150th Anniversary celebration. Under the firm’s Heart Hats community outreach program, its 1,600 employee-owners spent three weeks building 300 bicycles and 300 wagons for children in local communities. In total, 30 community and healthcare organizations will benefit from the donations, including 13 in California. “There is no better way to celebrate McCarthy’s 150th anniversary and to reinforce our heritage as a community-based builder than by conducting a community outreach event and giving back to the communities in which we live, work and play,” said Randy Highland, McCarthy President, California Region. “McCarthy has focused on serving customers in the local community since its founding 150 years ago. The same principles our firm established in 1864 still guide us today: a focus on meeting each client’s needs, a willingness to work hard together to bring exceptional value to every project, and genuine people committed to improving people’s lives. We do that not only in the projects we build, but also through the McCarthy Heart Hats community involvement program, such as this bike and wagon building event and the various other in-kind services and donations we provide year round to local charities and individuals who need it most.”

The project broke ground in May and includes major renovations to the first-floor elevator lobby area and third-floor entry of the campus’ Student Services East building, where most of the college's offices are located. The project is scheduled to complete in October 2014. Since the building sits in the middle of an active campus, the team paid scrupulous attention to planning, execution, communication and, most importantly, safety. The steel erection took place during the course of one day without a single complication.

HNTB Women of the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project

HNTB Women of the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project

One of America’s most famous and iconic bridges, the Sixth Street Viaduct, acts as a vital connection between the growing Arts District on the west side of the Los Angeles River and the historic neighborhood of Boyle Heights on the east side. Built in 1932, the bridge needs to be replaced because of a chemical condition that is weakening the bridge’s concrete. The HNTB-designed Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project is the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles and is being led by the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering. Pictured are the Women of the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, including Deborah Weintraub, Chief Deputy City Engineer, Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering (front row center, blue jacket) along with several HNTB Corporation professionals including Lyubov Kingsbury, CADD technician (back row, 5th from right); Tran Le, bridge design engineer (back row, 3rd from right); and Jennifer Macisaac, project manager (backrow, 2nd from right). When complete, the new signature bridge will serve as a unique addition to L.A.’s skyline and the Los Angeles River as it improves mobility, enhances safety and connects communities. As a leading infrastructure solutions firm in the U.S., HNTB traces its roots to the West since beginning work on Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco Bridge in 1914, the firm’s first year of operation. In Southern California, HNTB has been involved in some of the region’s most high-profile, complex infrastructure programs that are reshaping the region. In addition to the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, HNTB’s signature infrastructure projects include: the Interstate 405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements project, the Tom Bradley International Terminal Expansion for Los Angeles World Airports; Seattle’s Sound Transit University Link light-rail and tunnel project; the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium; and the “Green Build” expansion at San Diego International Airport. Currently, the firm is providing design and engineering services for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project on behalf of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
