Construction on Davey Jackson Elementary School

Teton County School District No.1 hired Denver’s Durrant Group to plan the building that will become a multifunctional facility that the entire community can utilize. When the new, 81,844-sq-ft Davey Jackson Elementary is completed in January, it will become the one of the first LEED-certified school buildings in Wyoming, second to Greybull Elementary School, and will replace the existing 104,000-sq-ft Jackson Elementary School on the site.

With design elements and green building practices in place, the project team of Durrant; Hawtin/Jorgensen Architects; and GE Johnson Construction Co., of Jackson, Wyo., is working toward sustaining the community by greening its education.

Well Installation Denver Colorado 2009

Well Installation Denver Colorado 2009

Griffin Dewatering North Central installed a well in Denver Colorado to complete a pump test to determine the dewatering system that will be required. The well was 8” in diameter, all PVC, drilled 35’ to claystone. We placed a 5HP pump in the well and it yielded over the 200 GPM that was required. The sand content of the water was only listed as a trace or less than one parts per million, the NTU was less than 1 which is equivalent to tap water. The upper 10’ of the well had to be containerized into barrels due to contamination. The well was drilled and installed in one day, and then pump tested the next day.

Silver Mountain Resort: Gondola Base Bulding & Morning Star Lodge

Silver Mountain Resort Projects: Architects West and Landmark were retained to provide professional design services for the master plan and facilities design of the new Gondola Village at the Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho. The project involved the Village Plaza, remodel of the existing Gondola Base Facility, and new multi-use facilities including multi-story condominiums and retail/commercial space. Design influence for the project was based on local historical mining characteristics and materials. The project has had a major economic impact on the region making the former ski area into a year round destination resort. Phase 1 buildings included condominiums A & B. These two mixed-use buildings consisted of retail and commercial space at plaza level and five stories of condominiums for a total of 68 units. The Village Plaza, parking, and landscaping were part of this phase. Phase 2 included two condominiums. Building C consisted of retail/commercial space below one wing of the five story structure that housed 110 units. Building D was also a five story structure and consisted of 99 units. This phase of work included the balance of plaza development, parking, water features, and green space. All external spaces outside the “Silver Rapids” water park structure were designed as well. Phase 3 included the remodel to the Gondola Base building including an updated exterior and approximately 24,000 sf of space that was reprogrammed and remodeled, including additions, to improve guest services and provide consistent character with surrounding new architecture.

Removing door to compost building

Caption information for photo COMPOST BUILDING DEMOLITION BEGINS AT METRO WASTEWATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT DENVER, Dec. 16 — A work crew from All Metro Door and Lock Services (a subcontractor to Alliance Construction, the general contractor) removes a door from Compost Building 1 at the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility in December. Removing the doors is the first step in demolishing Compost Buildings 1 and 2, which began in December '09. The doors will be reused on Building 3 after the structure is strengthened so it can take the added weight from the doors. The compost sheds must be removed because Metro needs the land on which they sit to build new aeration basins in its South Plant. The $321 million South secondary improvements will enable the South Plant to remove ammonia and nitrates in the same manner the North Plant does. Metro’s compost facility began operating in June 1986, but composting stopped earlier this year in preparation for construction of the South secondary improvements. The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District is the largest wastewater treatment facility in the Rocky Mountain region. It treats about 140 million gallons of wastewater a day for the 1.6 million residents of its 615-sq.mi. metropolitan Denver service area. Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Community Corps Center: This 120,500 s.f. community center was made possible in part by the vision and funding of the Kroc family, The Salvation Army, City of Coeur d’Alene, and much community support. The facility houses a 10 lane x 10 lane, 25 yard x 25 meter competition swimming pool, indoor leisure pool activity center, locker rooms, indoor running track, fitness area, aerobics studio, multi-activity court with three basketball courts, indoor play structure, climbing wall, chapel and performing arts theater, community rooms, and full commercial kitchen. The theme of the design was to reflect the character and personality of the community. This is achieved with the use of masonry components using CMU and natural stone as primary components accented with wood detailing. The design solution is very curvilinear and organic in nature. Landscape and site development components add to the overall composition of this unique design on a 12 acre site. The mixed use facility will be a prominent fixture in the fabric of the City, serving the families of community.

The Plaza at Black Mountain

The Plaza at Black Mountain

Nestled in the gorgeous desert of Cave Creek, Arizona, the Plaza at Black Mountain was painted with the most sustainable and fade resistant house paint available. NeverFade™ Exterior Paint Series is a professionally-applied exterior coating, engineered with Kynar Aquatec® resin. This durable fluoropolymer provides exceptional weatherability, outlasting traditional exterior paints. The manufacturer warrants the paint to not fade for 15-years making it environmentally-sustainable because the property owner will not have to repaint the plaza for at least that amount of time. NeverFade™ is also very low in VOCs, which reduces its contribution to harmful air pollution. With its water-based composition, it has significantly reduced odor and requires no harmful solvents for cleanup.

Golden Triangle Construction recently completed two fire station projects designed by OZ Architecture for the West Metro Fire Protection District in Lakewood. The Station No. 8 project included a new 10,628-sq-ft, two-story facility constructed adjacent to the existing facility in Lakewood. Station No. 8 needed upgrades and more space not only because it was one of the older and smaller stations in the district, but also because it is the home of West Metro’s Dive Team, a technical rescue division within the West Metro Fire Dept. that specializes in rescuing people from water.

Vista Peak Campus P-8 Exploratory

This new prototype facility houses preschool through eighth grade with a special education suite. The facility is part of a 100-acre campus that includes a new high school, sports fields, stadia, and a district transportation building. The challenge was to design the school and site such that it could be operated as a single program with a central administration core, or as two individual programs with uniquely identified administration suites on the end of each of two classroom wings. The solution has split parking lots to accommodate this future change if desired. In the split scenario the two educational programs would share cafeteria, PE, art and media center spaces.

With respect to the late local architect, Thomas W. Benton, the renovation of the Crandall Building will modernize this early 1970s building, bringing it to 21st century standards, while considering appropriate scale, mass and character. The existing circular windows are retained and louver screens maintain the horizontality of the building. Upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to sustainable environmental systems will maximize efficiency. Increased window fenestration will capture natural light, increase natural ventilation and views of Aspen Mountain. Potential LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Certification for major renovation will be pursued for this project.

This new 33,152 sf facility is replacing the school’s existing 7,500 sf building. In addition to adding more classrooms and lab spaces, the team is expected to achieve LEED Gold Certification thru energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, controllability of systems, indoor air quality, daylight and views, etc. The design placed the 1,700 sf mechanical room prominently in a glass enclosed exhibit room at the main lobby – becoming both a showpiece as well as a teaching tool where instructors will use the actual functioning building equipment for teaching. Several mechanical systems have been combined in order to give the apprentices exposure to more equipment, and also to increase the overall building energy efficiency. Heat recovery units will take the heat from welding lab spaces to reduce loads in the winter months. All of the equipment for the facility is high energy efficiency and low water consumption to emphasis the school’s commitment to sustainability.

The solar carports cover 600 parking spaces and are targeted to start producing energy next month. Solar carports are a creative way to use available land for solar arrays. They repurpose current parking lots, add incremental economic value by lowering campus energy spending and protect cars from the elements.

Fourteen new solar carports that if the panels were laid end-to-end would span nearly 5.5 miles are now installed and will produce approximately 1.6 megawatts of energy per year at four Denver Federal Center buildings. This final phase completes GSA’s largest single solar installation in the United States. Nearly 7 megawatts of additional renewable power will be online by the end of the year, saving approximately $500,000 in electricity costs annually for the campus.

Natural light enters the galleries through the skylights in the high galleries and then through a perforated-concrete drop ceiling. Extensive pre-planning was used to conceal all the electrical conduits for the lighting, shade mechanisms, and fire suppression systems that were located above the design of this unique ceiling.

From the beginning of construction, temporary power was crucial. In a typical construction project, walls are poured, then the floors. For this complex plan, the cast-in-place concrete structure included up to 50 workers building each wall and/or floor in separate sections and sequences. Through this process, E Light electricians were on standby to ensure reliable temporary power at all times. Without power, the all-concrete structure would have come to a standstill, as multiple vibrators settled the concrete into their forms.

Power Design, Inc. is Headed West: Colorado Expansion and New Project Award Announced

Power Design, Inc., one of the top electrical contractors in the U.S., is expanding its operation into Colorado. Recently awarded the Alameda Station project in Denver, St. Petersburg-based Power Design looks forward to completing the project in this westward state. “The expansion into Colorado is a major milestone for the growth and success of Power Design, and we are looking forward to establishing ourselves in this new market,” said Stephen Beals, divisional operations manager. “We are thrilled to have our first venture in this state be our 11th project with Wood Partners and are happy to continue our relationship with the nationally-recognized developer.” Located in the historic Baker district of Denver, Colorado, the 338-unit Alameda Station community will be built on more than five acres with access to the Alameda Light rail station. With construction already underway, Alameda Station will feature unique living spaces, a sustainable green design and pedestrian-friendly urban living. The Denver metro area continues to outpace the rest of the nation in job growth, with employment rising 2.3 percent in the first half of 2012 alone. Nationally, construction for multifamily projects is expanding at one of the fastest rates in the country, with more than 3,000 units expected to be completed by the end of the year.
