The first two projects to be built under the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative are under construction, with one project slated for completion in the fall and the other about halfway done. The $50-million USTAR Life Sciences Research Center at Utah State University in Logan is being built by Gramoll Construction of North Salt Lake and is a month ahead of schedule and on budget, says project manager Gary Hansen. It will be completed in October. The other USTAR project is the $130-million James L. Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Sandy,

Wasatch Front Activity Report

This year will be another tough one for the commercial construction industry along the Wasatch Front. General contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers alike are having to come to grips with a market being driven almost exclusively by public, municipal and infrastructure projects, and by the fact that lending institutions still have not recovered from their collapse. Privately developed projects in all markets retail, restaurant, office buildings and other speculative-type work have come to a virtual halt. Its no surprise that the private sector is lagging, and that will continue, says Rich Thorn, president/CEO of the Associated General Contractors

Boise Activity Report

As in the rest of the nation, construction activity in Idahos capital city of Boise has struggled with declining state funds and ultra-tight credit markets. Like everywhere else, there are not a lot of projects to build, says Bryan Whipple, president of Interior Systems Inc. of Boise and a member of the board of directors for the Idaho Associated General Contractors. Our approach to dealing with it is traveling to work in other locations and having to adjust our pricing structure in order to be more competitive. There are a lot of bidders on every project, and its gotten to

The $1.725-billion Interstate-15 CORE project in Utah County – the largest and most expensive highway job in the Beehive State’s history – officially kicked off at the end of March at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The mammoth design-build project is being built by a four-firm consortium called Provo River Constructors and could not have come about at a better time for the local construction industry, which has been struggling for nearly two years. Firms working in commercial construction in Southern Utah have been scrambling the past 18 months to stay afloat during brutal economic times. “We’re still doing work, but construction is a tough business to be in right now,” says Doug Watts, president of St. George, Utah-based Watts Construction. “We’re doing what we can to ride out the storm and keep our people working.” The new, $168-million St. George Airport is situated on a 12,000-acre site about 10 miles southeast of St. George. Public works and municipal projects are virtually the only commercial type of activity currently going on in Southern Utah,
